    Area of Science:

    • Psychiatry
    • Adolescent Medicine
    • Public Health

    Background:

    • Adolescent suicide attempts present a significant clinical challenge.
    • Increasing frequency necessitates a deeper understanding of contributing factors.

    Observation:

    • A systematic review examined 82 adolescents (ages 12-18) admitted for self-destructive behavior evaluation.
    • Data collected included family structure, school functioning, suicidal risk, depression, and life stressors.

    Findings:

    • Most adolescents were moderately depressed; a notable portion denied self-harm intent.
    • Open anger expression, sadness, and premeditated attempts were common.
    • Family disruption and poor school functioning were prevalent.
    • Suicidal risk correlated with current stress; depression correlated with both lifelong and current stress.

    Implications:

    • Identifying overt anger and depression is crucial for effective intervention.
    • Understanding these factors aids in appropriate treatment and recurrence prevention.
    • Targeted interventions can improve outcomes for suicidal adolescents.
