Optimal exercise therapy to improve cognitive function in middle-aged and elderly patients with stroke: A systematic

Objective:
This study investigated the effects of different exercise therapies on the improvement of cognitive function in middle-aged and elderly patients with stroke and analyzed the optimal form of exercise therapy.
Methods:
A literature search was conducted in five databases: Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Library, PubMed, and SPORTDiscus. The search was conducted from the creation of the databases until August 15, 2024. Pairwise and network meta-analyses were performed using "Stata 17.0."
Results:
A total of 34 randomized controlled trials, which were categorized into seven different exercise therapies, were included for paired meta-analysis and network meta-analysis. The combined direct and indirect comparisons showed that body and mind exercises were the best exercise therapy for improving cognitive function in patients with stroke.
Conclusions:
In the present study, we comprehensively confirmed the effectiveness of exercise therapy in promoting cognitive function in patients with stroke and analyzed for the first time the differences in the effects of different exercise therapies on improving cognitive function in patients with stroke. Results showed that body and mind exercises were the best exercise therapy, followed by exercise joint cognitive. Future studies should further explore the detailed mechanisms of the effects of different forms of exercise therapy on the cognitive functions of patients with stroke and provide more appropriate and targeted exercise therapy prescriptions.
