Interobserver variability in measuring feline interventricular septum thickness via echocardiography was poor to moderate. This impacts interpreting cardiac measurements between different veterinary specialists.
Area of Science:
- Veterinary Cardiology
- Diagnostic Imaging
Background:
- Echocardiography is the gold standard for diagnosing feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
- Previous studies reported low interobserver variability in echocardiographic measurements.
Purpose of the Study:
- To test the hypothesis that interobserver variability is high when measuring interventricular septum (IVS) thickness in cats.
Main Methods:
- 29 veterinary cardiologists measured IVS thickness from echocardiographic images of 4 cats.
- Measurements were taken from right-sided parasternal left ventricular outflow tract views.
- Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was used for analysis.
Main Results:
- Poor interobserver repeatability was found for the IVS base (ICC: 0.4).
- Moderate repeatability was found for the rest of the IVS (ICC: 0.6).
- Observer and training location contributed to measurement variance.
Conclusions:
- Interobserver repeatability for feline IVS measurements is poor to moderate.
- Findings are critical for comparing echocardiographic interpretations between observers.
- Training location may influence variability in multi-institutional studies.
