Development of electromagnetic drop weight release mechanism for human occupied vehicle

Abstract:
In a human-occupied vehicle (HOV), the drop weight mechanism is used to adjust the ascent/descent motion. In this paper, a new innovation has been developed through the effective integration of a permanent magnet and an electromagnet. The main advantage of this Electromagnetic Drop Weight Mechanism (EMDW) is that it requires power to be supplied at the time of drop weight (25 kg) cut off. From Response surface methodology (RSM) using desirability approach, the design criteria for EMDW System required to drop a 25 kg weight is the combination of 20 A, 18 NOT, 106 mm coil length and 24 V DC. The difference between numerical and experimental analysis was around 7.32%. The mean effect plot analysis shows that current and number of turns of coils were found to be predominant factor in designing of EMDW. To quantify the system for working in the sea, a hyperbaric chamber test at 50 bar was carried out and the system is found to be effectively working.
