Background:

  • High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is a time-efficient exercise modality.
  • Limited evidence exists comparing HIIT's effects on inhibitory control and working memory (WM) against moderate-intensity continuous exercise (MICT).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of HIIT, moderate-intensity interval exercise (MIIT), and MICT on inhibitory control and WM in healthy adults.
  • To compare cognitive performance across different exercise intensities and types.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized crossover design involving 25 healthy college students.
  • Participants completed 15-minute sessions of HIIT, MIIT, MICT, and a resting control (CON).
  • Inhibitory control and WM were assessed using the Stroop and 2-back tasks, respectively.

Main Results:

  • HIIT significantly improved response times on the Stroop task across congruent, incongruent, and neutral conditions compared to control and/or other exercise types.
  • HIIT led to a significant increase in hits on the 2-back task compared to MIIT, MICT, and CON.

  • These findings suggest HIIT is a practical and time-efficient intervention for improving cognitive functions, potentially beneficial for clinical populations.
