From Dry Cavities to Healing Pathways: Innovations in Managing Empty Nose Syndrome

Background:
Empty nose syndrome remains one of the rare and least touched topics worldwide. It needs to be dealt with in detail to understand its cause, pathophysiology, types and treatment options that are available at present. Still today management plans related to pathogenesis have not yet reached common consensus. The primary objective of this review is to present and evaluate the newer treatment options and techniques of empty nose syndrome.
Design:
Systematic literature review.
Methods:
A comprehensive search was conducted across multiple databases, including PubMed, Embase, Cochrane CENTRAL, and Google Scholar, covering the period from 1970 to 2024 was performed for studies of recent and newer options available for treatment of empty nose syndrome All included articles were categorized according to level of evidence.
Results:
Five hundred and sixty papers were identified, of which 18 were found to be relevant for this review. There are multiple techniques used in treatment of the same but still there is no consensus as to what the specific and best options are for the patient.
Conclusions And Recommendations:
Turbinate resection should be done judiciously and invasive nasal surgeries should be opted as a last resort or preferentially after medical treatment.We support the cautious use of these screening tools as adjuncts to clinical decision-making and early diagnosis. Post-operative conservative preventive measures for empty nose syndrome will help to prevent this rare disease. Nasal humidification, patient education, and treatment of possible additional medical conditions say for example depression constitute first lines of treatment.
