Psychophysiological response specificities: a replication over a 12-month period.

    Summary

Individual stress responses (ISR) significantly influence physiological and psychological variables, with some stability over time. These findings on stress reactivity in students replicate earlier research.

    Area of Science:

    • Psychophysiology
    • Stress Research
    • Human Behavior

    Background:

    • Understanding individual differences in stress response is crucial.
    • Previous research indicates variability in physiological and psychological reactions to stressors.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To quantify the variance in physiological and psychological responses attributable to individual-specific (ISR), stimulus-specific (SSR), and motivation-specific (MSR) patterns.
    • To assess the stability of individual response patterns over time.

    Main Methods:

    • Fifty-eight students were exposed to four distinct stress conditions: mental arithmetic, reaction time, free speech, and cold-pressor test.
    • Eight physiological (e.g., skin conductance, heart rate, blood pressure) and five psychological (e.g., anger, irritability, motivation) variables were monitored.
    • A three-factor ANOVA was employed to analyze the proportions of variance accounted for by different response patterns.

    Main Results:

    • Individual specific response patterns (ISR) explained a substantial proportion of variance: 33-40% for physiological and 9-13% for psychological variables.
    • Stimulus specific response patterns (SSR) accounted for 11-19% of physiological and 8-14% of psychological variance.
    • Motivation specific response patterns (MSR) explained 17% of physiological and 14-16% of psychological variance. Approximately 25% of subjects exhibited stable ISR for physiological variables after two months, and 14% after twelve months.

    Conclusions:

    • Individual-specific response patterns are a major determinant of physiological and psychological reactions to stress.
    • While some individual stress response patterns demonstrate stability over time, a significant portion remains variable.
    • The findings reinforce previous research from this laboratory on stress reactivity and individual differences.
