Development of a digital Compton suppression system for neutron Aactivation analysis

Abstract:
Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA) is a precise, non-destructive method for quantifying elements but faces challenges with trace elements near detection limits. This study introduces a digital Compton suppression system to enhance NAA's sensitivity by reducing Compton backscattering in gamma-ray spectra. The system, consisting of an HPGe detector and NaI (Tl) detectors, was modeled using MCNP code and optimized with digital electronics. Performance tests with 60Co and 152Eu sources showed a Compton suppression factor of 1.485 in the optimized setup. Analysis of two standard soil samples demonstrated significant improvements in detection limits and minimum detectable masses using suppressed spectra compared to unsuppressed spectra. The findings from this study are expected to contribute significantly to the field of nuclear sciences, providing researchers and analysts with a robust methodology to precisely measure elements in various scientific applications.
