Developing an outperformed bifunctional water splitting catalyst serving in both basic solutions and seawater is of great significance. Herein, we synthesized the binder-free copper mesh (CM)-based Pt-Cu3P/Cu3(PO4)2 through two-step reaction courses. The achieved Pt-Cu3P/Cu3(PO4)2/CM (abbreviated as Pt-Cu3P/CPO/CM) has the appearance of nanosheets decorated with uniformly distributed nanoclusters. Electrochemical testing results confirm its Pt/C/CM-like hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) behavior and superior to RuO2/CM oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity. In addition, to deliver a 10 mA cm-2 current density, the acquired voltage of Pt-Cu3P/CPO/CM is only 1.653 V in basic solutions and 1.676 V in seawater, even lower than the Pt/C/CM-RuO2/CM electrode pair (1.668 V) in the basic solutions. Further insight analysis certifies that the in situ-formed Pt-Cu3P/CPO heterojunction, together with the enlarged electrochemical surface-active area and the shortened charge transfer resistance, hugely improved the electrocatalytic property of Pt-Cu3P/CPO/CM. This work not only obtains an excellent self-supported bifunctional catalyst but also provides a material design idea to other Cu3(PO4)2-based catalysts.
