    Summary

This case study details the first reported instance of co-existing temporal arteritis and Sjögren's syndrome. The findings suggest temporal arteritis may be part of the vasculitis spectrum in Sjögren's syndrome.

    Area of Science:

    • Rheumatology
    • Immunology
    • Internal Medicine

    Background:

    • Sjögren's syndrome is a chronic autoimmune disease primarily affecting exocrine glands.
    • Temporal arteritis (giant cell arteritis) is a systemic vasculitis typically affecting medium and large arteries.

    Observation:

    • A patient presented with characteristic clinical and laboratory findings of both Sjögren's syndrome and temporal arteritis.
    • This represents the first documented case of this dual diagnosis in the English literature.

    Findings:

    • The co-occurrence of these two distinct autoimmune conditions was observed.
    • The combination could arise coincidentally or suggest a shared underlying etiology.

    Implications:

    • Temporal arteritis may represent an additional manifestation within the spectrum of vasculitic disorders associated with Sjögren's syndrome.
    • This case expands understanding of autoimmune disease associations and potential shared pathogenic mechanisms.
