Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Emergency Medicine
  • Social Work

Background:

  • Human trafficking (HT) affects approximately 17,000 individuals annually in the US.
  • An urban academic medical center's adult emergency department (AED) lacked routine HT screening.
  • The study addressed the need for identifying victims within this critical healthcare setting.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To implement a validated HT screening tool in an AED.
  • To identify victims of human trafficking.
  • To connect identified victims with community resources.

Main Methods:

  • Nurses received education on the Rapid Appraisal for Trafficking (RAFT) tool.
  • Eligible patients in the AED were screened using the RAFT tool.
  • Positive screens led to offers of community resource lists and social work evaluation.

Main Results:

  • 1.6% (195/11,925) of patient encounters were screened.
  • 10 patients screened positive for HT.
  • Resource acceptance varied, with most declining resources, though nurses found the tool feasible and necessary.

Conclusions:

  • Routine HT screening in emergency departments can improve victim identification.
  • The RAFT tool facilitates resource provision for an underserved population.
  • Nursing staff education and referral services are crucial components of this intervention.
