This study introduces Pd single-atoms doped Cu3P quantum dots (Pd-Cu3P SA-QDs) as a bifunctional electrocatalyst. This catalyst efficiently removes nitrate and formaldehyde from wastewater, simultaneously producing ammonia and hydrogen.
Area of Science:
- Environmental Chemistry
- Materials Science
- Electrochemistry
Background:
- Nitrate and formaldehyde in industrial/agricultural wastewater pose significant environmental and health risks.
- Existing purification methods are energy-intensive, slow, and costly.
- There is a need for efficient and sustainable methods for pollutant removal and resource recovery.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop a bifunctional electrocatalyst for simultaneous nitrate reduction and formaldehyde oxidation.
- To achieve efficient removal of pollutants and concurrent production of valuable chemicals (ammonia and hydrogen).
- To create a self-powered system for wastewater treatment and energy generation.
Main Methods:
- Synthesis of Pd single-atoms doped Cu3P quantum dots (Pd-Cu3P SA-QDs).
- Electrochemical evaluation of Pd-Cu3P SA-QDs for nitrate reduction reaction (NO3RR) and formaldehyde oxidation reaction (FOR).
- Construction of a self-powered galvanic system integrating both reactions.
Main Results:
- Pd-Cu3P SA-QDs demonstrated high activity and selectivity for NO3RR, producing ammonia with 99% faradaic efficiency (FE) at a positive onset potential (+0.36 V vs RHE).
- The catalyst efficiently oxidized formaldehyde (FOR) at a low onset potential (-0.07 V vs RHE), yielding formate (>90% FE) and hydrogen (>95% FE).
- A self-powered galvanic system achieved an open-circuit voltage of 0.892 V and a peak power density of 12.1 mW cm-2, generating 8.8 KWh kg-1 of electrical energy.
Conclusions:
- Pd-Cu3P SA-QDs offer a promising bifunctional electrocatalyst for simultaneous wastewater remediation and energy production.
- The dual-directional catalytic approach significantly improves efficiency and sustainability.
- This integrated system presents a novel strategy for tackling pollution and energy challenges.
