Over 1.7 million veterans report disfiguring scars from military service.
Body disfigurement significantly impacts veterans' psychological well-being and relationships.

Purpose of the Study:

To review the psychological impact of body disfigurement on military veterans.
To identify common psychological impacts, coping strategies, and adaptations.

Main Methods:

Integrative review of 19 moderate-to-high quality studies.
Searched PubMed, CINAHL, ProQuest, PsycBSI, and Scopus (2014-2024).

Main Results:

Identified themes: Situational Awareness (family, feelings, relationships, self-discovery) and After-Review Actions (soldiering on, growing stronger).
Resilience, family support, and post-traumatic growth are crucial for veteran healing.

Conclusions:

Nurses facilitate veteran resilience via support groups, family involvement, and emotional aid.
Longitudinal studies are recommended to track long-term effects of visible injuries on veterans.
