This study reviews planetary health education programs to identify current challenges and inform future curriculum development for ecosystem health and sustainability. Findings will guide educational strategies for a healthier planet.
Area of Science:
- Environmental Health
- Public Health Education
- Ecosystem Sustainability
Background:
- Climate change impacts like air pollution and extreme weather pose significant threats to human health.
- Planetary health, conceptualized in 2015, emphasizes the interconnectedness of human and Earth's well-being.
- Growing economic development and longevity increase environmental burdens, yet systematic planetary health education is lacking.
Purpose of the Study:
- To clarify the current status and challenges of planetary health education.
- To identify and analyze implemented and unevaluated educational programs.
- To provide insights for developing future planetary health curricula.
Main Methods:
- A scoping review following PRISMA guidelines and the Population-Concept-Context framework.
- Searched major academic databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, etc.) for original papers and conference proceedings.
- Included studies describing planetary health education; excluded reviews and non-English/Japanese papers.
Main Results:
- 28 studies were selected as of August 2025.
- Data collection occurred from May 2024 to July 2025.
- Preliminary analysis is scheduled for September 2025, with publication expected by October 2025.
Conclusions:
- The study will identify current challenges in planetary health education.
- Findings will inform the development of future curricula.
- The research aims to promote ecosystem health and sustainability through education.
