Single individuals are more vulnerable to suicide reattempts. This study highlights the need for timely interventions for those with a history of suicide attempts, especially in the post-attempt period.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Psychiatry
- Epidemiology
Background:
- Suicide reattempts are common among individuals with prior attempts, indicating ongoing vulnerability.
- Data on suicide reattempts in Iran is limited, necessitating local research to inform prevention strategies.
Purpose of the Study:
- To explore suicide reattempts among survivors in Fars province, Iran, during 2023.
- To identify factors predicting suicide reattempts to inform targeted prevention strategies.
Main Methods:
- A prospective study analyzed data from the Integrated Suicide Data Monitoring and Registration System for 9472 suicide attempters over 352 days in 2023.
- Statistical analyses included descriptive statistics, chi-square, t-tests, and logistic regression to identify predictors of reattempts.
- Ethical approval was obtained from the relevant committee.
Main Results:
- Out of 9472 attempters, 577 individuals (6.1%) reattempted suicide.
- Single individuals had significantly higher odds of reattempting suicide (OR = 1.57).
- The average interval between attempts was 5.2 weeks, with 75% occurring within 15 weeks. Age, gender, and day of the week were not significant predictors.
Conclusions:
- Single individuals represent a vulnerable group for suicide reattempts, requiring tailored interventions.
- Vigilance during the high-risk period immediately following a suicide attempt is critical for prevention.
- Future research should employ longitudinal and qualitative methods to understand the multifaceted factors influencing suicide reattempts.
