    Summary

    Constructional apraxia errors in brain-damaged patients (BDP) showed no clear qualitative differences between right and left hemispheres. Simplification and spatial relation difficulties were common, challenging distinct executive and visual-spatial mechanisms.

    Background:

    • Constructional apraxia is a deficit in producing drawings or constructions.
    • Previous hypotheses suggested distinct executive and visual-spatial mechanisms for right and left brain-damaged patients.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate qualitative differences in drawing errors between right and left brain-damaged patients.
    • To determine if distinct "executive" and "visual-spatial" error types underlie constructional apraxia based on lesion side.

    Main Methods:

    • Evaluated drawings from 70 control subjects and 213 brain-damaged patients (95 right, 118 left).
    • Two independent judges performed quantitative and qualitative assessments of drawings.
    • Classified errors into "executive" (simplification, omissions) and "visual-spatial" (spatial relations, orientation) categories.
