Design Example: Alignment of a Road Line Using GIS

104
The alignment of a road line using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a critical process in civil engineering, combining advanced technology with practical decision-making. This methodology begins with the collection of geospatial data, including information on land cover, geomorphology, drainage patterns, slope, and contour details. Such data is typically acquired through satellite imagery and GIS tools, offering a comprehensive understanding of the terrain.Once the data is gathered, it...

Short-distance Transport of Resources02:12

Short-distance Transport of Resources

16.5K
Short-distance transport refers to transport that occurs over a distance of just 2-3 cells, crossing the plasma membrane in the process. Small uncharged molecules, such as oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water, can diffuse across the plasma membrane on their own. In contrast, ions and larger molecules require the assistance of transport proteins due to their charge or size. Transport across membranes also occurs within individual cells, playing a variety of essential roles for the plant as a whole.

Manipulation and Analysis01:21

Manipulation and Analysis

59
GIS manipulation and analysis functions are vital for decision-making and planning. These activities range from data retrieval tasks, such as selecting information based on specific criteria, to advanced analytical techniques that address complex spatial problems. One critical GIS analysis method is overlaying, which combines multiple data layers to examine impacts. For example, overlaying a river-dammed lake boundary with road networks can identify affected infrastructure. Another common...

Area of Science:

  • Operations Research
  • Supply Chain Management
  • Decision Science

Background:

  • Global e-commerce growth necessitates efficient cross-border logistics.
  • Evaluating logistics service providers (LSPs) is complex due to diverse data and uncertainty.
  • Existing multi-criteria decision-making models struggle with heterogeneous and uncertain data.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To propose HD-CBDTOPSIS, a hybrid multi-criteria group decision-making model for evaluating cross-border LSPs.
  • To handle heterogeneous data types and uncertainty in logistics service provider evaluation.
  • To provide a robust framework for selecting optimal LSPs in dynamic e-commerce environments.

Main Methods:

  • Developed HD-CBDTOPSIS, integrating normal cloud models (NCMs) for uncertainty representation.
  • Introduced an improved multi-step backward cloud transformation with sampling replacement (IMBCT-SR) for dataset conversion.
  • Utilized a novel Cloud Bhattacharyya Distance (CBD) for similarity measurement and objective criteria weighting via coefficient of variation (CV).
  • Applied a cloud-based Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) for ranking LSPs.

Main Results:

  • The proposed HD-CBDTOPSIS model effectively handles heterogeneous data (exact, interval, datasets, linguistic terms).
  • The Cloud Bhattacharyya Distance (CBD) demonstrates superior discrimination compared to traditional distance measures.
  • Objective weighting using CV based on CBD ensures reliable criteria importance.
  • The model successfully ranks alternative LSPs under uncertain and multi-dimensional conditions.

Conclusions:

  • HD-CBDTOPSIS offers an effective, flexible, and robust solution for evaluating cross-border LSPs.
  • The integration of NCMs and CBD addresses key challenges in complex decision-making scenarios.
  • This model supports informed decision-making in the expanding global e-commerce logistics sector.
