Objective:
To conduct a comparative analysis of the spectral parameters of the electroencephalogram (EEG) in females at different stages of alcohol remission.
Material And Methods:
Sixty EEGs from female patients diagnosed with alcohol dependence were analyzed. At the time of enrollment in the study, the patients were at different stages of remission: the alcohol-deprivation stage (Group 1), the remission stabilization stage (Group 2), and the established remission stage (Group 3).
Results:
Statistical analysis of the EEG power spectrum revealed higher values in the alpha range for Group 3 patients in the occipital lead (O1: p=0.011 and p=0.027) and temporal leads (T5: p=0.001 and p=0.012; T6: p=0.022 and p=0.029) compared to Group 1 and Group 2 patients, respectively. Statistically significantly higher values of the power spectrum in the beta range were also found for Group 3 patients in the frontal (F7: p=0.001; F8: p=0.002), parietal (P3: p=0.041; P4: p=0.045 and p=0.043), occipital (O1: p=0.002; O2: p=0.008 and p=0.003), and temporal (T5: p=0.002 and p=0.001; T6: p=0.001 and p<0.001) leads. There were no statistically significant differences in quantitative parameters of EEG power spectrum between Groups 1 and 2 (p>0.05).
Conclusion:
The results of the comparative analysis indicate a significant restructuring of the functional state of the brain in females only after 1 year of abstinence from alcohol.
