Epilepsy knowledge test for adolescents (EpiTest-A): psychometric evaluation in Turkish adolescents and development

Purpose:
This study aimed to create a valid and reliable measurement tool to determine the knowledge level of adolescents with epilepsy about the disease.
Design & Methods:
A quantitative research approach was adopted for the present study, involving the application of a survey to evaluate the knowledge levels of adolescents with epilepsy about their condition. The participants consisted of 122 adolescents with epilepsy. In the development of the knowledge test, a pool of 63 items was created on each topic needed by adolescents with epilepsy. It was sent to 10 experts in the field of pediatrics to evaluate the clarity and comprehensibility of the items. Expert opinions were assessed with the content validity index. A draft form of a 35-item knowledge test was created by expert suggestions and researchers. The content validity and reliability of the items in the knowledge test applied to adolescents with epilepsy were evaluated with ITEMAN analysis and descriptive statistics were used.
Results:
It was determined that the discrimination levels of the "EpiTest-A" consisting of 23 items, were sufficient and that the knowledge test was an easy but reliable measurement tool that could distinguish those who knew about the disease from those who did not.
Conclusion:
It was determined that the "EpiTest-A" is a valid and reliable measurement tool for adolescents.
Implications For Practice:
"EpiTest-A" is an easy and applicable measurement tool suitable for the developmental characteristics of adolescents.
