Abstract:
With the worsening of environmental pollution and the rising prevalence of obesity, the combined effects of cadmium (Cd) exposure and obesity-related metabolic disorders contribute to cardiovascular injury. Therefore, it is urgent to explore their molecular mechanisms and prevention strategies. This study focused on the protective effects and mechanisms of zinc (Zn) supplementation on cardiac function in obese individuals with Cd toxicity. In present study, we established a cardiomyopathy model with dual pathological burdens of heavy Cd exposure and high fat diet induced obesity. Our results showed that Zn supplementation improved the insulin sensitivity and myocardial function. Moreover, Zn increased metallothionein levels which facilitated heavy metal chelation, reduced the harmful effects of Cd, and alleviated myocardial oxidative stress, hypertrophy, fibrosis, and apoptosis in the Cd toxicity and obesity related cardiomyopathy. These findings provide a theoretical foundation for developing nutritional intervention strategies for patients affected by environmental pollution and metabolic syndrome, while promoting the precise application of functional health products.
