Background And Aim:
High-quality causal evidence for the association between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is lacking. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between OSA and MAFLD using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and Mendelian Randomization (MR).
Methods And Results:
From the NHANES database 2005-2008, we accessed data to assess the association between OSA and MAFLD by weighted multivariate logistic regression. Then, the corresponding phenotypic data were obtained from the FinnGen database and MR was used to verify and judge the causal direction between them. Cross-sectional analysis of 3448 participants in the NHANES showed the OSA was associated with higher risk of MAFLD after adjusted confounders [OR: 1.96 (95 %CI:1.53, 2.52), P < 0.0001]. MR Results also showed that OSA increased the risk of MAFLD [IVW, OR = 1.50, 95 %CI 1.07-2.11, P = 0.02], which was consistent with cross-sectional results.
Conclusions:
Our study supports that OSA increases the risk of MAFLD, but further research is needed to elucidate the specific mechanisms of occurrence.
