    Summary

    The 1-mg dexamethasone suppression test (DST) shows similar abnormal rates in elderly patients with primary degenerative dementia and major depression. An abnormal DST does not predict dementia outcome in depressed patients.

    Background:

    • Depression with reversible dementia is common in the elderly, posing diagnostic challenges.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the utility of the 1-mg dexamethasone suppression test (DST) in elderly psychiatric patients.
    • To investigate the relationship between abnormal DST results and different forms of cognitive dysfunction in depression.
    • To determine if DST results can predict the outcome of dementia in depressed individuals.

    • The 1-mg DST is not clinically useful for predicting dementia outcomes in depressed elderly patients with cognitive dysfunction.
    • Abnormal DST results may indicate common underlying hypothalamic dysregulation in elderly depression and dementia.
    • Further research is needed to understand the neurobiological links between depression and dementia in older adults.
