Abstract:
Religiosity is a desirable coping strategy for many people who are experiencing negative life events, such as infirmities and stressors. However, no studies have examined the beneficial effects of religiosity on resilience and mental health when dealing with chronic hepatitis. This study aimed to investigate the association among religiosity, stress, anxiety, depression, resilience, and subjective well-being (SWB) in hepatitis patients. A total of 136 participants were evaluated in Clinics Hospital of the Federal University of Triângulo Mineiro, Brazil. Patients with high and low intrinsic religiosity (HIR and LIR) were compared across outcomes of mental health, SWB, and resilience. Most patients (52.9%) were males with a mean (SD) age of 47 (13) years. The results of the multiple linear regression analysis revealed that intrinsic religiosity was associated with stress, depression, resilience, and SWB. Our findings demonstrate that hepatitis patients with HIR have greater resilience, a higher level of SWB, and better mental health, thus the need to assess religiosity/spirituality as well as the need for health professionals to consider these constructs as coping strategies for the disease.
