Abstract:
Cyclization of α,α'-dibromo tetrapyrrolic NiII complex 4Ni with K2S, Na2Se, and Na2Te gave NiII 5-sulfacorrole, NiII 5-selenacorrole, and NiII 5-telluracorrole, respectively, as the first example of 5-heterocorrole. The corresponding CuII 5-heterocorroles were similarly synthesized from CuII complex 4Cu, while NiII 5-oxacorrole was synthesized by reaction of 4Ni with Ni(cod)2 and 2,2'-bipyridine and subsequent oxygen-insertion reaction of molecular oxygen, and CuII 5-oxacorrole was obtained from reaction of 4Cu with CuI thiophene-2-carboxylate (CuTC) and tetrabutylammonium hydroxide. Moderate aromatic characters of the NiII 5-heterocorroles are evinced by the 1H NMR chemical shifts, the absorption spectra, and DFT calculations. ESR measurement and simulation studies on the CuII 5-heterocorroles revealed that spins are largely centered on the CuII but a reduced spin density at the CuII is indicated for the CuII 5-telluracorrole.

Colors and Magnetism
When atoms or molecules absorb light at the proper frequency, their electrons are excited to higher-energy orbitals. For many main group atoms and molecules, the absorbed photons are in the ultraviolet range of the electromagnetic spectrum, which cannot be detected by the human eye. For coordination compounds, the energy difference between the d orbitals often allows photons in the visible range to be absorbed and emitted, which is seen as colors by the human...

Metal-Ligand Bonds
In these complexes, transition metals form coordinate covalent bonds, a kind of Lewis acid-base interaction in which both of the electrons in the bond are contributed by a donor (Lewis base) to an electron acceptor (Lewis acid). The Lewis acid in...
