Abstract:
Following the publication of this paper, it was drawn to the Editor's attention by a concerned reader that the control GADPH western blots shown in Fig. 5D were strikingly simillar to three lanes in the GAPDH panel shown in Fig. 4D, even though the experimental conditions reported in these figure parts were different, suggesting that one of these figures may have been assembled incorrectly. The authors were contacted by the Editorial Office to offer an explanation for this apparent anomaly in the presentation of the data in this paper; however, up to this time, no response from them has been forthcoming. Owing to the fact that the Editorial Office has been made aware of potential issues surrounding the scientific integrity of this paper, we are issuing an Expression of Concern to notify readers of this potential problem while the Editorial Office continues to investigate this matter further. Insights
This expression of concern addresses potential data integrity issues in a published oncology paper. Investigations are ongoing regarding similar western blot controls, prompting a review of scientific validity.
Area of Science:
- Oncology Research
- Molecular Biology
- Scientific Publishing Ethics
Background:
- Concerns raised regarding potential data manipulation in published research.
- Specific focus on western blot images for Glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) controls.
Purpose of the Study:
- To address reader-reported similarities in GAPDH western blot controls between different experimental conditions.
- To investigate potential scientific misconduct and data presentation anomalies.
Main Methods:
- Editorial review of submitted figures (Fig. 5D and Fig. 4D).
- Communication with authors for clarification on data presentation.
Main Results:
- Striking similarities noted between GAPDH western blot lanes in Fig. 5D and Fig. 4D.
- Authors have not provided a response to the Editorial Office's inquiry.
Conclusions:
- An Expression of Concern is issued due to potential issues with scientific integrity.
- Further investigation is required to resolve the data presentation anomalies.
