    Background:

    • DMA is typically formed from trimethylamine (TMA), a choline breakdown product, via gut bacteria.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the relative importance of dietary choline, gut bacteria, and other mechanisms in DMA formation.
    • To determine if mammalian cells possess endogenous pathways for DMA synthesis.
    • To describe an improved gas-chromatographic method for methylamine measurement.
