Symptomatic enterocele in an adolescent male: successful robotic repair

This case report concerns a male patient in early adolescence who presented to our clinic with several months of abdominal discomfort, irregular bowel habits, tenesmus and a sensation of incomplete evacuation. Previous treatment was through osmotic laxatives. Initial workup of physical examination and endoscopy was inconclusive and did not show any anatomical abnormalities. A defecography study was performed and revealed a large enterocele with rectorectal intussusception and a small anterior rectocele. The patient elected to proceed with a robotic-assisted rectopexy with obliteration of the anterior cul-de-sac. His recovery was without complications, and he experienced a complete resolution of his symptoms by 3 months postoperatively. While enterocele is well documented in postmenopausal women, its presentation in the demographic of young male patients is exceedingly rare. In presenting this case, we aim to raise awareness of the potential for enterocele in young male patients and illustrate its successful treatment through robotic surgical intervention.
