Internalized sexual prejudice (ISP) does not significantly correlate with sexualized drug use (SDU) among LGBQ individuals. Further research is needed to understand the complex relationship and contextual factors influencing SDU.

Background:

LGBQ individuals exhibit higher rates of sexualized drug use (SDU) compared to heterosexual individuals.
Minority Stress Theory posits internalized sexual prejudice (ISP) as a potential factor contributing to this disparity.

Purpose of the Study:

This meta-analysis examined the association between internalized sexual prejudice and sexualized drug use in LGBQ populations.

Main Methods:

A systematic literature search was conducted across major databases, including PsycINFO, Cinahl, Medline Complete, Scopus, and Web of Science.
Eighteen studies with a total of 16,483 participants were included in a meta-analysis.
Subgroup analyses were performed based on drug type.

Main Results:

The overall relationship between ISP and SDU was small and statistically non-significant (r = .012, p = .316).
Subgroup analyses by drug type also showed non-significant differences (p = .468).
Variability in operationalization of ISP and SDU, and evidence of publication bias were noted.

Conclusions:

The link between internalized sexual prejudice and sexualized drug use is complex and inconsistent.
Unmeasured contextual factors may moderate this relationship.
Future research should explore subgroup differences and diverse theoretical frameworks to understand SDU in LGBQ individuals.
