Should acute gold overdose be invariably treated?

A Pik, N Cohen, E Yona

    The Journal of Rheumatology
    |December 1, 1985

    Summary

Acute gold overload is rare and its effects are unclear. In two rheumatoid arthritis patients, accidental gold overload had no adverse effects, suggesting a conservative, watchful approach is appropriate.

    Area of Science:

    • Rheumatology
    • Clinical Pharmacology
    • Toxicology

    Background:

    • Acute gold overload is an uncommon clinical event.
    • The clinical and pathophysiological consequences of acute gold overload are not well understood.
    • A definitive therapeutic approach for acute gold overload has not been established.

    Observation:

    • Two patients with rheumatoid arthritis inadvertently received an acute overload of gold.
    • The patients' clinical courses were monitored following the inadvertent gold administration.
    • No specific medical interventions were administered to manage the gold overload.

    Findings:

    • Both patients experienced benign and uneventful clinical courses despite the acute gold overload.
    • The study suggests that acute gold overload may not necessitate aggressive therapeutic interventions.
    • The observed outcomes indicate a potentially favorable prognosis for acute gold overload cases.

    Implications:

    • A conservative approach, involving watchful expectancy, may be suitable for managing inadvertent acute gold overload.
    • This finding could influence clinical guidelines and patient management strategies for gold-related adverse events.
    • Further research is warranted to fully delineate the long-term effects and optimal management of acute gold overload.
