Changes in Skin Color: Clinical Perspectives

3.3K
The first thing a clinician sees is the skin, so the examination of the skin should be part of any thorough physical examination. Most skin disorders are relatively benign, but a few, including melanomas, can be fatal if untreated. A couple of the more noticeable disorders, albinism and vitiligo, affect the appearance of the skin and its accessory organs.
Albinism
Albinism is a genetic disorder that affects (completely or partially) the coloring of skin, hair, and eyes. The defect is primarily...

Area of Science:

  • Animal Science
  • Colorimetry
  • Data Science

Background:

  • Eggshell color is a key commercial trait with diverse blue-green subtypes.
  • Objective color measurement is needed to complement visual grading.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To correlate CIELab color values with visual egg color classification.
  • To develop simplified indices for grading blue-green eggs.

Main Methods:

  • Measured CIELab values (L*, a*, b*) for 2274 blue-green eggs.
  • Used linear discriminant analysis (LDA), random forest, SVM, and NNET models.
  • Developed and compared simplified color indices.

Main Results:

  • LDA model showed superior performance in color classification.
  • The new index L* - 4C* demonstrated a high correlation with visual classification (-0.810).
  • L* - 4C* significantly outperformed the SCI index (p < 0.05).

Conclusions:

  • LDA is optimal for predicting blue-green egg color classification.
  • The L* - 4C* index provides an accurate and efficient method for grading blue-green eggs.
