1Department of Nursing, Hoseo University, #20, Hoseo-ro 79beon-gil, Baebang-eup, Asan, South Korea.
Background:
Insomnia is a prevalent issue among older adults, particularly those living alone. Spielman's 3P behavioral model highlights the role of predisposing, precipitating, and perpetuating factors in the development of insomnia.
Objectives:
This cross-sectional study aimed to identify the prevalence of insomnia and its association with anxiety, depression, stress, and loneliness among older adults living alone in Seoul, Korea.
Methods:
A total of 153 participants were recruited from four welfare centers in Seoul between 1 July and 31 August 2022. Data were collected using validated instruments including the Korean version of the Insomnia Severity Index (K-ISI) and the Goldberg Anxiety Scale (GAS). Statistical analyses involved univariate and multivariate logistic regression to identify key risk factors for insomnia.
Results:
The prevalence of clinically significant insomnia was 31.4 %. Anxiety (OR=4.10, 95 % CI: 1.38-12.16) and depression (OR=1.62, 95 % CI: 1.24-2.11) were significant predictors.
Conclusions:
The findings highlight the need for targeted interventions to address mental health issues and mitigate insomnia among older adults living alone. Future research should explore longitudinal relationships and intervention strategies.
