Abstract:
In a typical open column with thin stationary phase layer, the quality factor (qmax) and the optimal Peclet number (Peopt) of the column structure relate as Peopt=4qmax2. This leads to the conclusion that the column efficiency depends only on the column effective characteristic dimension, the solute diffusivity in the solvent, the solvent viscosity and the column pressure drop. What is interesting about this counterintuitive conclusion is that the column plate height has no effect on the efficiency.
