Summary

The Tecnis Eyhance intraocular lens (IOL) offers comparable visual acuity to conventional monofocal IOLs in combined cataract and epiretinal membrane surgery. Eyhance also enhances patient satisfaction and intermediate vision, particularly in myopic patients.

Background:

  • Tecnis Eyhance (DIB00V) is an "IOL-plus" monofocal intraocular lens (IOL) designed to improve distance and intermediate vision.
  • Potential complications of multifocal IOLs, such as macular surgery difficulties, have not been fully evaluated for Eyhance in combined cataract and epiretinal membrane (ERM) surgery.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the visual acuity and patient-reported outcomes of the Tecnis Eyhance (DIB00V) versus a conventional monofocal IOL (DCB00V).
  • To evaluate the efficacy of Eyhance in combined cataract and ERM surgery.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective, nonrandomized, observational study conducted across multiple centers in Japan.
  • Patients undergoing combined cataract and pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) for ERM were enrolled.
  • Postoperative best-corrected distance visual acuity (BCDVA), distance-corrected intermediate visual acuity (DCIVA), surgical parameters, and patient satisfaction (Japanese-modified Catquest-9SF) were compared between the two IOL groups at 3 months.

Main Results:

  • No significant difference in BCDVA or DCIVA was observed between the Eyhance and Tecnis-1 (DCB00V) groups.
  • Rasch analysis showed significantly higher general satisfaction scores for patients with Eyhance (p = 0.0269).
  • Subgroup analysis indicated improved intermediate visual acuity with Eyhance in patients with preoperative myopia (spherical error < -1.5 D).

Conclusions:

  • Tecnis Eyhance provides comparable visual acuity to conventional monofocal IOLs in combined cataract and ERM surgery.
  • Eyhance demonstrates improved postoperative patient satisfaction and intermediate visual acuity in preoperatively myopic individuals.
  • Surgical parameters remain consistent between Eyhance and conventional monofocal IOLs in this combined procedure.
