Disorders of Leukocytes01:27

Disorders of Leukocytes

1.8K
Leukocyte disorders can lead to either leukopenia, characterized by an abnormally low leukocyte count, or leukocytosis, marked by a very high leukocyte number.
Leukopenia may result from bone marrow disorders, autoimmune diseases, and infectious diseases. For example, conditions such as multiple myeloma and aplastic anemia can impair the bone marrow's ability to produce adequate leukocytes. Similarly, autoimmune diseases like lupus and viral infections such as HIV can prompt the immune...

Summary

This study presents a rare case of KIT-negative systemic mastocytosis (SM) linked with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Treatment with azacitidine and venetoclax showed reduced mastocytosis but not full hematologic recovery.

Area of Science:

  • Hematology
  • Oncology
  • Rare Diseases

Background:

  • Systemic mastocytosis (SM) involves abnormal mast cell proliferation.
Keywords:

  • SM can manifest with diverse symptoms and is often associated with a KIT mutation.
  • Rarely, SM co-occurs with other hematologic neoplasms, such as acute myeloid leukemia (AML).
