Anatomy of the Brain: Ventricles

8.2K
There are hollow fluid-filled cavities known as ventricles deep inside the human brain. There are two lateral ventricles, one in each cerebral hemisphere, and each has three different projections — the anterior, inferior, and posterior horns visible from the lateral side. A thin membrane called the septum pellucidum separates the two lateral ventricles. The slender third ventricle in the diencephalon is connected to each lateral ventricle via a channel called the interventricular foramen.

Glaucoma: Overview

1.3K
Glaucoma is an eye condition characterized by increased intraocular pressure that damages the retina and optic nerve, leading to irreversible blindness if left untreated. The human eye has various components, including the cornea, iris, pupil, lens, and optic nerve. Aqueous humor is secreted by the epithelium of the ciliary body in the posterior chamber and flows through the trabecular meshwork and canal of Schlemm, maintaining normal intraocular pressure. The trabecular meshwork and the canal...

Summary

Choroid plexus volume (CPV) may be larger in patients with brain diseases compared to healthy individuals. Further research is needed to confirm CPV as a clinical biomarker for disease severity.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroimaging
  • Biomarkers
  • Neurology

Background:

  • The choroid plexus (CP) is a brain structure involved in cerebrospinal fluid production.
  • Volumetric changes in CP are linked to various brain diseases.
  • Advanced segmentation algorithms aid CP volumetry studies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the clinical relevance of choroid plexus volume (CPV) estimation in brain diseases.
  • To assess the utility of CPV as a diagnostic or prognostic tool.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic literature search across major databases (PubMed, Embase, Cochrane).
  • Qualitative descriptive analysis and risk-of-bias assessment of included studies.

Main Results:

  • Forty-eight studies were included, covering multiple sclerosis, neurodegenerative diseases, psychiatric disorders, and other brain conditions.
  • Many studies reported larger CPV in patients versus healthy controls.
  • Automatic segmentation with manual correction was the most common technique.

Conclusions:

  • Growing interest in CPV and its segmentation as a potential biomarker.
  • Current evidence is insufficient to correlate CPV enlargement with clinical severity or functional scores.
  • Further investigation is warranted to establish CPV's clinical utility.
