Influence of active eye position on cervical range of motion. An observational study

Background:
The association between the activity of the neck muscles and eye movements has been addressed in numerous studies. Eye movements may change muscle synergies during neck movement.
Objective:
The objective of this study is to assess whether there are differences in cervical range of motion (ROM) depending on the eye position.
Methods:
This is an observational study based on a total of 42 subjects aged between 18 and 60 years. In all participants cervical ROM was measured in flexion, extension and left and right rotations in three different starting conditions of eye position: eyes looking to cervical movement, eyes in the opposite direction and eyes neutral for the cervical movement.
Results:
There were no statistically significant differences between the eye position and the amount of motion for cervical movement (p > 0.05). The Pearson correlation coefficient was statistically significant for associations between the age of the participants and the active cervical ROM for total flexo-extension with neutral eyes (r = -0.54; p < 0.01) and total rotation with neutral eyes (r = -0.32; p = 0.04).
Conclusions:
There were no differences in cervical ROM depending on the position of the eyes in asymptomatic subjects. A moderate inverse relation between age and cervical ROM with neutral eyes was shown in asymptomatic subjects.
