Background:
Quality of Life (QoL) is vital in people's lives. Physical activity and dance enhance QoL. The aim of the present study was to compare the QoL of young adults in different types of dance and group exercise.
Methods:
Two hundred young adults (151 females, 49 males) were classified in four groups, according to the type of dance or exercise they participated in: a) Greek Traditional Dancers (GTDs), b) Latin Dancers (LDs), c) Pilates/Yoga/whole body exercisers (group exercisers) and d) sedentary life style group, who did not participate in any form of organized physical activity. In this observational cross-sectional study design, QoL was assessed by conducting a Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) and physical activity was assessed by the Leisure Time Physical Activity questionnaire. A one-way multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) determined the differences in QoL parameters and a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) determined the differences in physical activity among the different groups.
Results:
GTDs scored significantly higher than LDs and group exercisers in six of the eight QoL parameters, Physical Role, Bodily Pain, Vitality, Social Function, Emotional Role and Mental Health. However, there were no significant differences in Physical Activity among the above groups (GTDs, LDs, group exercisers), while sedentary exhibited the lowest levels of Physical Activity.
Conclusion:
It seems that different types of dance are connected with different QoL levels, with GTD being more supportive than LD in the specific study, with respect to QoL in young adults. These differences are not attributed to the amount of physical activity. More research is needed on the connection of types of dance with QoL aspects.
