Effect of segmental control program on hamstring peak torque, pain and disability in patients with non-specific low

Aim:
To investigate how a segmental control program impacts hamstring peak torque, pain, as well as functional disability in individuals suffering from Non-specific low back pain.
Design:
Single masking, pre-post randomized controlled trial.
Setting:
NSLBP patients from the Outpatient Clinic at Faculty of Physical Therapy, Giza, Egypt.
Methods:
60 patients with NSLBP were randomized into three groups utilizing an opaque sealed envelope. Group "A" (closed kinetic chain), Group "B" (open kinetic chain) and Group "C" (control): all groups were receiving the conventional therapy. Treatment was applied 3 times a week for successive four weeks. The patient's pre and post-treatment evaluation was done utilizing an isokinetic dynamometer, visual analogue scale (VAS) in addition to Oswestry Disability Index for hamstring peak torque, pain intensity and functional disability.
Results:
Multiple pairwise comparisons showed statistically significant differences among pre and post-treatment in all variables in the 3 groups, closed kinetic, open kinetic and control group as p-value <0.05. Between groups analysis revealed that there were no statistical significant differences among closed and open segmental control groups while post treatment, a statistical significant differences (p-value<0.05) was observed among closed kinetic and control as well as between open kinetic and control group.
Conclusion:
In patients suffering from non-specific low back pain, both open as well as closed kinetic chain exercises had a beneficial effect on pain and functional disability.
