Summary

Pulsatory patterns in active biological matter emerge from a minimal actomyosin cortex model. Nonreciprocal interactions drive these patterns, controllable by activity strength and turnover rate.

Background:

Pattern formation in active biological matter is driven by coupled chemical and mechanical processes.
The actomyosin cortex in cells is a key example of an active thin film exhibiting complex patterns.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the emergence of pulsatory patterns in a minimal actomyosin cortex model.
To understand the role of a single stress-regulating chemical species and its exchange with the cytoplasm.

Main Methods:

Development of a low-dimensional amplitude-phase model for a 1D periodic domain and spherical surface.
Analysis of a secondary parity-breaking bifurcation arising from nonreciprocal interaction of spatial modes.
Numerical simulations to confirm analytical predictions and explore impermeable domains.

Main Results:

Nonlinear waves and pulsatory patterns emerge from a parity-breaking bifurcation.
The patterns are driven by nonreciprocal interactions between concentration field modes.
Analogous pulsatory patterns were observed on impermeable domains.

Conclusions:

A generic mechanism for nonreciprocity-driven pulsatory patterns in active matter is identified.
These patterns are controllable by adjusting the strength of biological activity and the turnover rate of chemical species.
