Summary

This study found no link between arsenic in drinking water and prostate cancer risk. High arsenic exposure levels did not increase prostate cancer odds in Northern Chile participants.

Background:

  • Northern Chile offers a unique setting to study arsenic's carcinogenic effects due to high exposure levels.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between arsenic exposure in drinking water and prostate cancer.
  • To evaluate prostate cancer risk in a population with a wide range of arsenic exposure.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study was conducted from 2015 to 2019.
  • 343 prostate cancer cases and 337 controls (age ≥40) were enrolled.
  • Lifetime arsenic exposure, smoking, family history, and screening data were collected.

Main Results:

  • 23% of participants experienced lifetime arsenic exposure exceeding 800 µg/L.
  • No significant association was found between highest and lowest quartiles of arsenic exposure and prostate cancer.
  • Adjusted odds ratios for highest vs. lowest quartiles were 1.14 (cumulative) and 1.17 (average).

Conclusions:

  • Arsenic exposure in drinking water, even at high concentrations, is not associated with an increased risk of prostate cancer.
  • The study suggests arsenic is not a risk factor for prostate cancer.
