Summary

Transtracheal wash (TTW) in goats provides insights into respiratory health. Cytology of TTW fluid (TTWF) in healthy goats shows macrophages as the main cells, and bacterial cultures often yield mixed growth, including Bibersteinia trehalosi.

Background:

  • Transtracheal wash (TTW) is a common diagnostic tool for respiratory diseases in various animal species.
  • Limited information exists regarding TTW procedures and findings in healthy goats.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe a technique for collecting transtracheal wash fluid (TTWF) from healthy goats.
  • To characterize the nucleated cell and bacterial populations within TTWF from healthy goats.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective descriptive study involving thirty-three healthy Boer goats.
  • Percutaneous TTW was performed on sedated goats.
  • Collected TTWF was analyzed for cytologic findings and subjected to aerobic and anaerobic microbiologic cultures.

Main Results:

  • Macrophages were the predominant cell type in TTWF (40%-92%), followed by lymphocytes and neutrophils.
  • Mixed bacterial growth was observed in 62.1% of samples.
  • Bibersteinia trehalosi was the most frequent bacterial species identified in pure cultures (17.2%).

Conclusions:

  • The described TTW method is minimally invasive and feasible for goats in various settings.
  • The study characterizes normal cytologic and bacterial populations in goat TTWF.
  • Cytologic findings do not reliably predict bacterial culture results in healthy goats.
