Ski jumpers should aim for an angular momentum of the center of gravity (AMCG) around 0.0391 s⁻¹ at takeoff. This finding provides objective coaching indicators for improving ski jumping performance and jump distance.
Area of Science:
- Sports Science
- Biomechanics
Background:
- Competitive ski jumping performance relies on jump distance and style.
- The influence of angular momentum on ski jumping, especially during takeoff, is not well understood.
Purpose of the Study:
- To quantify angular momentum during the takeoff phase in ski jumping.
- To determine the optimal angular momentum for maximizing jump distance.
Main Methods:
- Analyzed the angular momentum of the center of gravity (AMCG) of the jumper-ski system in the sagittal plane.
- Used high-speed cameras (200 Hz) to film 21 ski jumpers (16 male, 5 female) on a medium hill.
Main Results:
- A significant quadratic relationship was found between AMCG at takeoff and jump distance.
- The optimal AMCG value at the apex of the takeoff phase was determined to be approximately 0.0391 s⁻¹ (p < 0.05).
Conclusions:
- The study identifies an appropriate AMCG value of 0.0391 s⁻¹ for optimal ski jumping takeoff.
- These findings offer objective biomechanical indicators for ski jumping coaching and performance enhancement.
