Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Neuroendocrinology
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Middle ear neuroendocrine tumors are exceptionally rare.
  • Facial paralysis as a presenting symptom is highly uncommon for these tumors.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report a rare case of middle ear neuroendocrine tumor presenting with facial paralysis.
  • To review the literature on middle ear neuroendocrine tumors and their management.

Main Methods:

  • A 19-year-old female patient with transient facial paralysis and a middle ear mass underwent surgical exploration.
  • A transcanal endoscopic approach was utilized for surgical exploration of the tympanic cavity.
  • Histopathologic examination confirmed the diagnosis of a middle ear neuroendocrine tumor.

Main Results:

  • The middle ear mass was confirmed as a neuroendocrine tumor.
  • Complete surgical excision of the tumor was achieved.
  • The patient experienced no tumor recurrence and no further episodes of facial paralysis post-surgery.

Conclusions:

  • Middle ear neuroendocrine tumors, though rare, can present with significant symptoms like facial paralysis.
  • Endoscopic transcanal surgery is a viable approach for diagnosis and treatment.
  • Complete excision appears to be an effective treatment strategy, preventing recurrence and symptom resolution.
