Understanding Hepatitis B Knowledge, Attitudes, and Stigma in the Korean Community in Australia

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a major global health concern, disproportionately affecting some culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities in countries like Australia. In Australia, where 70% of chronic HBV infections occur in people born overseas, the Korean community remains vulnerable to misinformation, stigma, and barriers to accessing appropriate care. Despite high vaccination and testing rates, misconceptions about HBV transmission continue to hinder prevention and treatment efforts.

This study explored HBV knowledge, attitudes, and stigma among individuals of Korean ethnicity in Australia, identifying key factors influencing awareness and misunderstanding about HBV.

A cross-sectional survey of 599 participants was conducted through community events and online platforms. Participants completed measures of HBV knowledge, stigma, and attitudes. Multiple linear regression was used to identify predictors of HBV knowledge.

While over 80% of participants understood that a preventative vaccine is available for HBV and more than 75% understood that chronic HBV can develop into cirrhosis and liver cancer, misconceptions about transmission were widespread. Stigma was prevalent, particularly in employment settings, with 52.4% of the sample supporting HBV screening for job applicants and 83.0% anticipating they would experience stigma or discrimination if they had HBV. Younger age and knowing someone with HBV were identified as independent predictors of HBV knowledge.

Findings highlight the need for culturally tailored HBV education to correct misinformation, reduce stigma, and improve health outcomes within the Korean community in Australia. Public health efforts should prioritise accessible, culturally sensitive interventions to enhance HBV literacy and healthcare engagement.
