Caregivers of stroke survivors experience high rates of mental distress (44.7%) and work overload (64.5%), highlighting the need for improved social and health support programs.
Area of Science:
- Neurology
- Public Health
- Ergonomics
Background:
- Stroke is a leading cause of disability globally, significantly impacting daily activities and necessitating caregiver support.
- Informal caregivers play a crucial role in managing stroke survivors' needs, often facing substantial personal challenges.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the mental health and work overload experienced by informal caregivers of stroke survivors.
- To analyze caregiver burden using an ergonomics activity approach.
Main Methods:
- A mixed-methods approach was employed, involving 76 informal caregivers.
- Quantitative data collected using the Self-Reported Questionnaire-20 (mental distress) and Zarit Burden Interview (work overload).
- Qualitative data gathered through interviews and ergonomics activity analysis.
Main Results:
- Prevalence rates for mental distress and work overload were 44.7% and 64.5%, respectively, showing a strong correlation (r=0.707).
- Caregiver mental distress was linked to patient comorbidities and illiteracy.
- Qualitative analysis revealed caregivers' routine descriptions and profound physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion.
Conclusions:
- Findings underscore the urgent need for structural enhancements in social and health programs.
- Targeted interventions are required to mitigate the burden on caregivers of stroke survivors.
