Background:

Molar wear progression is a key indicator of diet and behavior in primates.
Existing methods like dentin exposure ratio (DER) may not capture detailed wear patterns.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate molar wear progression in a captive baboon population.
To compare a new quadrant-based dental wear scoring system (Krueger-Scott method) with DER.
To assess how wear patterns vary by age, sex, and occlusal region.

Main Methods:

Assessed mandibular second molars (M2) in 201 captive baboons at two timepoints.
Utilized 3D intraoral scans and the Krueger-Scott method (quadrant-based scoring) and DER.
Performed statistical analyses to test relationships between wear, quadrant location, sex, and age.

Both Krueger-Scott scores and DER values showed significant wear progression over time.
Krueger-Scott scores revealed distinct functional patterning in buccal and lingual cusps.

The Krueger-Scott method is more informative and efficient for tracking occlusal wear than DER.
This quadrant-level scoring captures regional wear variations and functional asymmetries.
