The coordination and substitution of hydrocarbon substrates is common for transition metals, and has been demonstrated in a handful of cases with molecules based on heavier p-block elements. By contrast, this behaviour is uncommon for the first-row p-block elements, probably due to the generally irreversible nature of their covalent bond formation. Boranes can loosely bind and, in cooperation with strong Lewis donors, covalently bind and functionalize olefins. However, the single-site reversible coordination and functionalization of olefins by first-row p-block elements remains elusive. Here we present a monovalent boron system able to coordinate olefins and mediate their liberation and functionalization, based on stable and well-defined borylene-olefin π complexes. These molecules are shown to be distinct from their conventional covalently bound form-boriranes-instead better resembling borylenes with π-bound olefins. The high π-complex character of these species suggests a rationale for their unique ability to reversibly bind and functionalize olefins.

Hydroboration-Oxidation of Alkenes
Regioselectivity and Stereochemistry of Hydroboration
Hydroboration proceeds in a concerted fashion with the attack of borane on the π bond, giving a cyclic four-centered transition state. The –BH2 group is bonded to the less substituted carbon and –H to the more substituted carbon. The concerted nature requires the simultaneous addition of –H and –BH2 across the same face of the alkene giving syn stereochemistry.
π Molecular Orbitals of 1,3-Butadiene
The simplest conjugated diene is 1,3-butadiene: a four-carbon system where each carbon is sp2-hybridized and has an unhybridized p orbital that contains an unpaired electron. According to molecular orbital theory, atomic orbitals combine to form molecular orbitals such that the number...

Alkynes to Aldehydes and Ketones: Hydroboration-Oxidation
One of the convenient methods for the preparation of aldehydes and ketones is via hydration of alkynes. Hydroboration-oxidation of alkynes is an indirect hydration reaction in which an alkyne is treated with borane followed by oxidation with alkaline peroxide to form an enol that rapidly converts into an aldehyde or a ketone. Terminal alkynes form aldehydes, whereas internal alkynes give ketones as the final product.
