High socioeconomic risk in young adults with type 1 diabetes (T1D) is linked to poorer sleep satisfaction and alertness. Addressing these risks may improve sleep and overall health in this population.
Area of Science:
- Endocrinology
- Sleep Medicine
- Public Health
Background:
- Socioeconomic factors significantly impact health outcomes in young adults with type 1 diabetes (T1D).
- The collective effect of socioeconomic risk on multidimensional sleep health in T1D young adults is not well understood.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the association between socioeconomic risk and various dimensions of sleep health in young adults with T1D.
Main Methods:
- Utilized baseline data from 44 young adults with T1D in a pilot RCT.
- Assessed socioeconomic risks using the Protocol for Responding to and Assessing Patients Assets, Risks, and Experiences (PRAPARE) framework.
- Evaluated sleep health across 6 dimensions (regularity, satisfaction, alertness, timing, efficiency, duration) using actigraphy and self-report, adjusting for covariates.
Main Results:
- Higher socioeconomic risk composite scores correlated with reduced sleep satisfaction (β=0.556, P=.001) and alertness (β=0.471, P=.005).
- Increased socioeconomic risk was also associated with a lower overall sleep health composite score (β=-0.368, P=.035).
- No significant associations were found for sleep regularity, timing, efficiency, or duration.
Conclusions:
- Elevated socioeconomic risk is independently associated with diminished sleep satisfaction and alertness in young adults with T1D.
- Interventions targeting socioeconomic risk factors may be crucial for enhancing sleep and health outcomes in this vulnerable group.
