Abstract:
Most existing studies considered that aerobic starvation destroyed nutrient removal effect in biological wastewater treatment. This study proposed a novel strategy: aerobic starvation simultaneously enhanced nutrient removal and residual sludge reduction, challenging the conventional view. Among 1, 5, 10 and 15 days of aerobic starvation, 10 days was optimal, increasing phosphorus removal rate, COD removal rate and daily sludge reduction efficiency from 56.4 %, 72.2 % and 0 to 95.9 %, 87.1 % and 72.8 %, respectively. The cDNA high-throughput sequencing showed that aerobic starvation promoted proliferation of Tetrasphaera (dominant phosphate accumulating organism that actually worked), reaching 72.6 %. Meanwhile, the DNA content in the supernatant after aerobic starvation was 10.6-fold higher than that before aerobic starvation, and the release of lactate dehydrogenase increased by 50.0 %. This study investigated promoting effect of aerobic starvation on Tetrasphaera-dominated enhanced biological phosphorus removal system, providing new insights for improving nutrient removal and reducing residual sludge in wastewater treatment.
