The Cochlea01:13

The Cochlea

50.6K
The cochlea is a coiled structure in the inner ear that contains hair cells—the sensory receptors of the auditory system. Sound waves are transmitted to the cochlea by small bones attached to the eardrum called the ossicles, which vibrate the oval window that leads to the inner ear. This causes fluid in the chambers of the cochlea to move, vibrating the basilar membrane.

The Auditory Ossicles

3.0K
The auditory ossicles of the middle ear transmit sounds from the air as vibrations to the fluid-filled cochlea. The auditory ossicles consist of two malleus (hammer) bones, two incus (anvil) bones, and two stapes (stirrups), one on each side. These bones develop during the fetal stage and are the ones to ossify first. They are fully mature at birth and do not grow afterward.
The aptly named stapes look very much like a stirrup. The three ossicles are unique to mammals, and each plays a role in...

Area of Science:

  • Audiology and Otolaryngology
  • Medical Technology
  • Digital Health and Social Media Analysis

Background:

  • Cochlear implants (CI) are crucial for sensorineural hearing loss rehabilitation, with expanding candidacy and improved technology.
  • Despite advancements, CI utilization remains suboptimal, necessitating an understanding of public perception.
  • Online platforms like Reddit offer unique insights into user sentiment regarding medical devices.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze sentiment expressed about cochlear implants (CI) within the Reddit community r/Cochlearimplants.
  • To identify trends in CI sentiment over time and correlate sentiment with engagement metrics.

Main Methods:

  • Collected and analyzed 1068 posts from r/Cochlearimplants (October-November 2024).
  • Utilized Natural Language Processing tools (TextBlob, VADER) to assess sentiment (positive, neutral, negative).
  • Examined metadata including date, comments, and upvotes; analyzed sentiment distribution and word count correlations.

Main Results:

  • Analysis of 1068 entries from 420 unique posters (2019-2024) showed a majority of positive (VADER: 52.9%) or neutral (TextBlob: 87%) sentiment.
  • A significant increase in negative sentiment was observed in 2024 compared to previous years (P < .001).
  • Negative posts had higher word counts, while positive posts received more upvotes.

Conclusions:

  • Online sentiment towards cochlear implants is predominantly neutral to positive, but shows a recent negative trend.
  • The growing negativity may correlate with increased CI utilization, highlighting evolving patient perspectives.
  • Understanding online sentiment is vital for healthcare providers to address patient concerns and combat misinformation.
